Meiringen is the mountain terminal of the Zentralbahn (formerly Brünig ferrococheril) línea from Lucerne and Interlaken, sitting al final de the Haslital valle beneath the dramatic Reichenbach Falls and the rugged Rosenlaui glaciar area. The falls are perhaps best known internationally as the site where Arthur Conan Doyle staged the apparent death of Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty, and a Sherlock Holmes museo in the town celebrates this literary conexión. The estación is the starting point for hikers and cyclists exploring the Bernese Oberland's oriental reaches, and the Aareschlucht gorge is a short viaje away.

Meiringen is reached by Zentralbahn trains from Interlaken Ost or Lucerne. The journey from Interlaken takes about 30 minutes, while from Lucerne via the Brunig Pass it takes about 90 minutes. The Brunig line is one of Switzerland's most scenic mountain crossings.

Zentralbahn operates services through Meiringen on the Interlaken-Lucerne line via the Brunig Pass. The Meiringen-Innertkirchen Bahn (MIB) narrow-gauge railway connects to the Aareschlucht gorge and the Grimsel/Susten pass roads.

Meiringen is famous as the setting for Sherlock Holmes' dramatic encounter at the Reichenbach Falls, reached by a historic funicular. The Aareschlucht, a narrow limestone gorge, is accessible by the MIB railway. The town also claims to be the birthplace of the meringue dessert.

Luggage lockers are available at Meiringen station. The station has a ticket office and tourist information. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is in the village centre, a few minutes' walk from the station.

Meiringen is the main town of the Haslital valley and an excellent base for exploring the region. PostBus services connect to the Grimsel, Susten, and Grosse Scheidegg passes. The area offers extensive hiking and the dramatic Gelmerbahn, Switzerland's steepest open-air funicular.
