Benevento est la principale gare ferroviaire desservant la capitale samnite de Bénévent, dans la région Campanie du sud de l'Italie, réputée pour son patrimoine romain dont l'Arc de Trajan. La gare est un nœud de jonction où la ligne Caserta–Foggia croise l'itinéraire vers Naples via Cancello, offrant des correspondances vers le reste du réseau ferroviaire italien. Benevento station is about a 15-minute walk from the historic centre. Walk along Viale dei Rettori towards the Corso Garibaldi, the main thoroughfare of the old town. The compact centre is entirely walkable.
Trenitalia regional trains connect Benevento to Naples in about 90 minutes via the inland route through Caserta. Some InterCity services also stop here. The station is a junction for lines heading to Foggia and into the Campania interior.
Luggage storage options at Benevento are limited. The station has a ticket office and basic facilities. The city is small enough to explore comfortably in a few hours for day visitors.
The Arch of Trajan, one of the best-preserved Roman triumphal arches, stands along the old Via Appia. The Romanesque cathedral and the Roman theatre are major landmarks. Benevento is also known for its Strega liqueur, produced here since 1860.
Benevento was an important city on the Via Appia, the ancient Roman road to Brindisi. It later became the capital of a powerful Lombard duchy. The city's Roman and medieval heritage is remarkably well-preserved despite significant World War II bombing damage.
