Alpnachstad station is directly adjacent to the Pilatus Bahn, the world's steepest cogwheel railway. The transfer from the mainline platform to the Pilatus railway takes just a few steps.

Zentralbahn trains on the Lucerne-Sarnen-Meiringen line stop at Alpnachstad. The journey from Lucerne takes about 20 minutes. Lake steamer services from Lucerne also call at the Alpnachstad pier nearby.

Alpnachstad station has limited facilities. The station is primarily an interchange for the Pilatus railway. The Pilatus Bahn station adjacent has a ticket office and small shop.

The Pilatus Bahn is the world's steepest cogwheel railway, with a maximum gradient of 48%. Built in 1889, it climbs 1,635 metres from Alpnachstad to the summit of Pilatus at 2,132 metres. The 30-minute ascent through alpine meadows and cliff faces is a spectacular engineering achievement.

The Golden Round Trip is a popular circular excursion combining a boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway up to Pilatus, a gondola and cable car down to Kriens, and a bus back to Lucerne. Alpnachstad is the starting point for the ascent portion of this iconic day trip.
