Appenzell is reached by Appenzeller Bahnen narrow-gauge trains from St. Gallen or Gossau, with the journey from St. Gallen taking about 50 minutes. The route passes through rolling green hills and traditional Appenzell farmland.

Appenzeller Bahnen operates all services to Appenzell, with connections to St. Gallen, Gossau, Herisau, and Wasserauen. From Wasserauen, a cable car ascends to Ebenalp, a popular hiking destination with cliff-side views and the historic Wildkirchli cave chapel.
