Clermont-Ferrand station is the main railway hub of the Auvergne region and the capital of the Puy-de-Dôme department, set in the volcanic heartland of France at the foot of the Chaîne des Puys — a UNESCO World Heritage volcanic landscape. The station is served by Intercités services from Paris Gare de Lyon and TER regional trains connecting Clermont-Ferrand with Lyon, Vichy, Thiers, and Issoire, though the city lacks a direct TGV connection which remains a long-standing political and infrastructure debate.
