Bellegarde-sur-Valserine is a junction station in the Ain department on the historic rail route between Lyon and Geneva, where the main line from Paris via Bourg-en-Bresse connects with the trans-frontier TER services into Switzerland. The station sits at the confluence of the Rhône and Valserine rivers near the dramatic Défilé de l'Écluse gorge, and was historically significant as the French customs and frontier station before the Schengen agreement simplified cross-border travel.
