Grenoble station is the main railway hub of France's 'Capital of the Alps', a major university city and high-technology industrial centre set in a dramatic bowl surrounded by the Chartreuse, Vercors, and Belledonne massifs. The station handles TGV services to Paris Gare de Lyon as well as TER regional trains to Lyon, Valence, Chambéry, and Gap, providing access to the surrounding ski resorts of the Alpes du Nord including Les Deux Alpes and Alpe d'Huez. Grenoble's tram network connects directly to the station forecourt, offering seamless access to the university campus, the city centre, and the télécabine cable car to the Bastille fortress above the city.

The cable car to the Bastille fortress offers panoramic views over the Chartreuse, Vercors, and Belledonne mountain ranges, and is a highlight of any visit to the city.
