Köln Hauptbahnhof is one of the busiest railway stations in Germany and in Europe, located immediately beside the towering Gothic spires of Cologne Cathedral — a view that makes arriving here one of the most dramatic entrances of any major terminus. It is a principal node for Thalys and Eurostar services to Brussels, Paris, and London, for ICE high-speed trains to Frankfurt, Berlin, and Amsterdam, and for regional services across North Rhine-Westphalia. The station's through-running design accommodates an extraordinary volume of trains daily, and the adjacent S-Bahn and U-Bahn networks extend its reach deep into the Cologne metropolitan area.

Köln Hbf opens directly onto the forecourt of Cologne Cathedral, placing you in the heart of the city the moment you step outside. The old town, Rhine promenade, and main shopping streets are all within a ten-minute walk of the station.

Köln Hbf is a major hub for international high-speed trains, including Eurostar services to London St Pancras, Thalys (now Eurostar) to Brussels and Paris, and ICE services to Amsterdam. Frequent ICE trains also run to Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin.

S-Bahn line S13 connects Köln Hbf to Cologne Bonn Airport (Flughafen Köln/Bonn) in approximately 15 minutes, with services running every 20 minutes. Regional express trains also cover the route and offer slightly faster journey times.

Luggage lockers and a staffed DB Gepäck counter are available at Köln Hbf on the main concourse level. The station is very busy, particularly at weekends, so arrive with extra time if you need to use these services.

Köln Hbf has an extensive range of shops, supermarkets, fast food outlets, and sit-down restaurants spread across its concourse. A DB Reisezentrum (travel centre) provides staffed ticketing and travel advice, and the station also has shower facilities available for a fee near the left-luggage area.
