München Hauptbahnhof ranks among the busiest stations in Germany and is registered under UIC code 8020347. It lies at the intersection of long-distance ICE and EuroCity corridors joining Munich with Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, Zürich, Vienna, and Rome, and is the surface terminus above the S-Bahn tunnel that carries the bulk of suburban traffic across the Bavarian capital. Much of the present structure dates from post-war reconstruction, the earlier building having been destroyed during the Second World War. Work on the Second S-Bahn Core Route will add further underground capacity beneath the station in the coming years. The Hauptbahnhof stands at roughly 48.14° N, 11.56° E, west of the Altstadt, and operates on Europe/Berlin time over Germany's 1,435 mm standard-gauge network.
