Just outside the medieval ramparts of Avignon, the city-centre station recorded as UIC 8776500 serves regional traffic on the corridor linking Lyon, Nîmes, and Marseille. It is the closer of the two stations serving the city: high-speed trains call instead at Avignon TGV to the south, which since 2013 has been joined to the centre by a short shuttle railway known locally as the Virgule. From the platforms it is a walk of a few minutes to the Palais des Papes, seat of the papacy for much of the fourteenth century, and to the surviving arches of the Pont Saint-Bénézet. Avignon Centre stands near 43.94 degrees north, 4.81 degrees east, in the Rhône delta country of Provence.

Avignon Centre is the historic city station inside the city walls, served by TER regional trains and some Intercités. Avignon TGV is a dedicated high-speed station on the LGV Méditerranée, located about five kilometres outside the city and connected by a shuttle bus to the centre.
