St-Maurice is a station in the canton of Valais at the dramatic narrowing of the Rhône valley, where a gorge has made the site strategically important since antiquity and where a historic bridge and fortifications mark the passage between cantons Valais and Vaud. It lies on the main SBB line from Geneva and Lausanne towards Brig and the Simplon tunnel, and is served by intercity trains as well as regional services connecting the Chablais region with the rest of French-speaking Switzerland.
