Samedan is the operating centre of the Rhaetian Railway in the Upper Engadine, a metre-gauge junction at about 1,705 metres above sea level in the canton of Graubünden, recorded as UIC 8509251. The Albula line from Chur meets here the routes towards St. Moritz and towards Pontresina, from where the Bernina line continues over the pass to Tirano in Italy. Both the Albula and Bernina sections were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008 for their engineering, which climbs the Alpine watershed without rack assistance. The airfield beside the village is among the highest in Europe and serves the resorts of the valley. Samedan lies near 46.53 degrees north, 9.87 degrees east, in the Europe/Zürich time zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Regular Rhaetian Railway (RhB) trains connect Samedan to St Moritz in about eight minutes. The two stations are only a few kilometres apart in the Upper Engadine valley, and bus services also cover the route.

Samedan is served by the Rhaetian Railway on the Albula and Bernina lines, making it a junction station for trains from Chur, St Moritz, and the Pontresina branch. The UNESCO-listed Albula Railway passes through here on its scenic route from Chur.

The station has a ticket counter, automated machines, and a café. Bicycle rental is available for exploring the flat Engadine valley, and the station is fully accessible with lifts to all platforms.

Luggage lockers are available at Samedan station, which is useful for visitors planning a day of skiing or hiking before catching an onward train. Larger items can also be registered through RhB's baggage forwarding service.

Samedan has one of the highest-altitude airports in Europe, and the village itself has a quieter, more authentic feel than nearby St Moritz. The Engadine Museum in St Moritz is only a short train ride away and gives excellent context for the region's culture and history.
