Livorno Centrale is a short walk or bus ride from the historic Venezia Nuova canal district and the central market. The passenger ferry terminal serving Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily is about two kilometres from the station, reachable by bus or taxi.

Trenitalia Regionale trains connect Livorno to Pisa in about 15 minutes and to Florence in around 90 minutes. Intercity and some Frecciabianca services also link Livorno to Rome and Genoa directly, making it accessible from much of northern and central Italy.

The station has a staffed ticket office, self-service machines, a café, and luggage lockers in the main hall. A taxi rank and local bus stop are located directly outside the main entrance, providing connections to the ferry port and beaches.

Coin-operated luggage lockers are available at Livorno Centrale and are useful for visitors combining a train journey with a ferry crossing from the nearby Grimaldi or Corsica Ferries terminals. A staffed deposito bagagli counter is also available during regular hours.

Livorno is famous for cacciucco, a rich seafood stew, best sampled in the trattorias around the Mercato Centrale, a ten-minute walk from the station. The city's multi-ethnic port heritage has shaped a distinctive and unpretentious culture quite different from Tuscany's art-tourism centres.
