Messina Centrale is the principal railway station of Messina, the Sicilian city that faces mainland Calabria across the narrow Strait of Messina, and for rail travellers crossing to or from Sicily it serves as the point of arrival and departure for the train ferry service that carries carriages across the strait. Long-distance Intercity services from Rome, Naples, and Reggio Calabria terminate here, with the extraordinary practice of splitting and loading entire train carriages onto the ferry Caronte having been a defining feature of Italian rail travel for many decades, though the system has seen changes and reductions over the years. The station is the hub for onward travel to Palermo, Catania, and Syracuse on the Sicilian network, and serves the vibrant city known for its Baroque churches and the Museo Regionale.
