Château-d'Oex estación lies in the canton of Vaud in the Pays-d'Enhaut region, on the de vía estrecha Montreux–Berner Oberland-Bahn (MOB) scenic ferrococheril de montaña that winds through the Pre-Alps between Montreux on Lake Geneva and Zweisimmen in the Bernese Oberland. The village is internationally known as a centre of hot-air ballooning, hosting a prestigious annual international balloon festival each January, and its traditional chalets and mountain scenery have long made it a quiet alternative to the more fashionable resorts nearby. The Golden Pass Panoramic Express, which links Montreux with Interlaken Ost via a transborde en Zweisimmen, passes through Château-d'Oex, offering visitantes one of the finest scenic rail viajes in Switzerland.

Chateau-d'Oex is on the MOB line between Montreux and Zweisimmen, about 60 minutes from Montreux. The GoldenPass route is scenic, climbing through vineyards and alpine meadows. The station is at the edge of the village centre.

Beyond the balloon museum and festival, Chateau-d'Oex is a traditional Pays-d'Enhaut village known for paper-cut art (decoupage) and alpine cheese-making. The surrounding mountains offer hiking and skiing, and the village maintains a distinctly French-Swiss pastoral character.
