It serves as a transfer point for passengers crossing between the German-speaking and French-speaking parts of Switzerland via the lakes region, and is a stop on several regional S-Bahn routes in the Bern agglomeration. The surrounding area is known for its asparagus production and wetland nature reserves around the nearby Murten lake district.
