Stein am Rhein is reached by Thurbo regional trains from Schaffhausen in about 20 minutes or from Kreuzlingen in about 40 minutes. The station is a short walk from the famous painted old town on the Rhine.

Thurbo regional trains on the Schaffhausen-Kreuzlingen line serve Stein am Rhein. Services run roughly hourly. Rhine river boats also connect the town to Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls, offering an alternative scenic route.

Stein am Rhein station has luggage lockers. The station is compact and within a few minutes' walk of the Rathausplatz and the painted houses. The small town is easily explored in a couple of hours.

Stein am Rhein has one of Switzerland's best-preserved medieval town centres, with elaborately frescoed houses surrounding the Rathausplatz. The Hohenklingen castle above the town offers panoramic Rhine valley views. The Rhine bridge and waterfront are particularly photogenic.

Boat services operate on the Rhine between Stein am Rhein, Schaffhausen, and the Rhine Falls during the summer season. The downstream journey to the Rhine Falls takes about 3 hours and passes through scenic countryside. Combining the boat and train creates an excellent circular excursion.
