Strasbourg station is the main railway hub of Alsace and one of the most important cross-border stations in Western Europe, reflecting the city's unique position on the Franco-German border on the Rhine. The original Strasbourg station (Gare de Strasbourg) was built during the German Imperial period between 1878 and 1883 and features a grand Romanesque Revival facade. In 2007 a striking glass dome was added to the front, creating a dramatic contrast between historic and contemporary architecture.
