🇨🇭 Göschenen
MajorSwitzerland
Göschenen is a mountain station at the northern entrance of the historic Gotthard Tunnel in the canton of Uri, perched at around 1,100 metres altitude at the head of the Reuss valley gorge. Before the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2016, virtually all passenger and freight rail traffic crossing the Alps through Switzerland passed through Göschenen, and the old tunnel portal remains an iconic landmark of 19th-century Swiss engineering. The station also serves as the lower terminus of the Schöllenenbahn rack railway that climbs the dramatic Schöllenen gorge to Andermatt, providing an important link for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn mountain network.

Frequently Asked Questions
Göschenen is the interchange station for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn rack railway to Andermatt, with the lower terminal at Göschenen located adjacent to the SBB platforms. The journey through the dramatic Schöllenen Gorge takes around twenty minutes.
SBB regional and InterCity trains on the Gotthard Panorama Express route stop at Göschenen, sitting at the north portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Not all fast IC trains call here, so checking the timetable before travel is important.
Göschenen is a small mountain junction station without dedicated luggage storage. Passengers travelling onwards to Andermatt should carry only what they need; ski equipment and oversized luggage can be sent ahead as registered luggage on the RhB network from Andermatt.
The Schöllenen Gorge is a spectacular granite ravine carved by the River Reuss below Göschenen, with the railway and an old road winding through its cliffs. The historic Teufelsbrücke (Devil's Bridge) is accessible on foot from the gorge floor and was once the only crossing on the Gotthard pass route.
Göschenen has a basic waiting area and ticket machine at the SBB level, with the MGB narrow-gauge platforms directly below. There is a small café near the station, and the village has limited shops suitable for picking up snacks before the mountain journey.
