Two stations serve Valence, and Valence Ville is the older of the pair: a city-centre stop on the classic Rhône valley line, listed under UIC code 8776100. Regional TER services call here on the corridor between Lyon and Marseille, together with trains working east towards Grenoble and the Alps. High-speed traffic uses Valence TGV instead, a separate station built on the LGV Méditerranée outside the city and joined to Valence Ville by a short rail link and local buses. The arrangement is common along the Rhône, where the high-speed line runs at a distance from the towns it serves. Valence itself lies between the Vercors massif and the Ardèche hills, at roughly 44.93 degrees north, 4.89 degrees east.

Valence Ville is the historic city-centre station served by TER regional trains and some Intercités services. Valence TGV is a separate out-of-town station on the LGV Méditerranée high-speed line, used by TGV trains to Paris, Lyon, and Marseille. A shuttle bus connects the two.

Valence Ville station is located at the edge of the city centre, just a few minutes walk from the main shopping streets and the Kiosque Peynet. Local bus services also depart from the station forecourt to all parts of Valence.

TER regional trains serve Valence Ville frequently, connecting to Lyon Part-Dieu in around one hour and to Grenoble and Montélimar. Some Intercités trains also stop here on routes along the Rhône valley.

Automated luggage lockers are available at Valence Ville station. Travellers combining a city visit with onward TGV travel often store bags here before taking the shuttle to Valence TGV.

Valence is the gateway to the Drôme Provençale and is famous as the birthplace of the Suisse Normande pastry chef tradition. The Old Town with its cathedral and the Musée de Valence are both within easy walking distance of the station.
