Altdorf is the cantonal capital of Uri and a station on the Gotthard route in central Switzerland, set in the broad Reuss valley just south of where the river flows into Lake Lucerne at Flüelen. The station serves the small capital town most famous as the setting of the William Tell legend — the market square with Tell's statue is a short walk away — as well as the gateway community for travellers heading south toward the Gotthard Base Tunnel portal at Erstfeld. S-Bahn and RegioExpress services connect Altdorf with Lucerne to the north and Erstfeld to the south on a regular basis throughout the day.
