Über Göschenen

Göschenen is a mountain station at the northern entrance of the historisch Gotthard Tunnel in the canton of Uri, perched at etwa 1,100 metres altitude at the head of the Reuss valley gorge. Before the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in 2016, virtually all passenger and freight rail traffic crossing the Alps through Schweiz passed through Göschenen, and the old tunnel portal remains an iconic landmark of 19th-century Swiss engineering. The station also serves as the lower terminus of the Schöllenenbahn Zahnradbahn that climbs the dramatic Schöllenen gorge to Andermatt, providing ein wichtiger link for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn mountain Netz.
