🇨🇭 Thusis

Major

Switzerland

Thusis stands at the mouth of the Viamala, the gorge through which the Hinterrhein cuts on its way north, and its station in the canton of Graubünden is recorded as UIC 8509189. It is the point at which the Rhaetian Railway's line from Chur turns south-east to begin the Albula route towards the Engadine, a climb of spiral tunnels and stone viaducts inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008. Postbuses leave the same forecourt for the San Bernardino pass and the Italian-speaking valleys beyond it. The road and rail routes here follow a corridor used since antiquity to cross the Alps. Thusis lies near 46.70 degrees north, 9.44 degrees east, at about 720 metres above sea level.
