Über Zermatt

Zermatt station is the car-free Alpine resort's sole Verbindung with the outside world by rail, sitting at 1,604 metres altitude at the end of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) line from Visp and Brig, with the famous Matterhorn visible from the Bahnsteig on clear Tage. The resort is one of Schweiz's most celebrated ski and hiking destinations, and the station is the lower terminus for the Gornergrat cog railway and the starting point for the renowned Glacier Express journey to St. Moritz. All vehicles except electric taxis are prohibited in Zermatt, meaning rail and the Netz of electric shuttles are the only means of transport, giving the station an besonders central role in daily life within the resort.

Zermatt is car-free and reachable only by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn from Visp or Brig, where you connect from mainline SBB trains. The scenic journey from Visp takes about 65 minutes, climbing through the Matter Valley. The Glacier Express from St. Moritz also terminates here.

Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) operates all services into Zermatt, as the village is on a narrow-gauge line. The Glacier Express panoramic service from St. Moritz and the regional shuttles from Visp/Brig are the main connections. The Gornergrat Bahn cog railway departs from opposite the station.

Luggage lockers are available at Zermatt station. The station also has a ticket office, a small shop, and tourist information. Since Zermatt is car-free, electric taxis and hotel shuttles meet arriving trains.

The Matterhorn, one of the world's most iconic peaks, dominates the view from Zermatt. The Gornergrat Bahn cog railway departs from directly opposite the station, climbing to 3,089 metres for panoramic glacier views. Zermatt offers year-round skiing, hiking, and mountaineering.

The Glacier Express departs from Zermatt station on its famous 8-hour panoramic journey to St. Moritz, crossing 291 bridges and passing through 91 tunnels. Seat reservations are mandatory. The train runs year-round but with reduced frequency in winter.
