Marseille St-Charles is the main railway terminus of France's second city and the gateway to Provence and the Mediterranean coast, its grand staircase leading down from the elevated station to the bustling streets of the city below. The station was completed in 1848 and substantially enlarged in the 20th century, and today handles TGV high-speed services to Paris Gare de Lyon in just over three hours as well as connections to Lyon, Montpellier, Nice, and international services toward Barcelona and beyond. TER regional trains fan out from St-Charles along the Côte d'Azur, into the Camargue, and toward the Provençal hinterland, positioning the station as the principal rail hub for the entire southeastern region of France.
