About Munich

München Hauptbahnhof is the principal railway station of the Bavarian capital and one of the busiest in Germany, lying at the intersection of long-distance ICE and EC corridors connecting Munich with Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, Zürich, Vienna, and Rome. The station was largely rebuilt after wartime destruction and features an extensive underground S-Bahn tunnel running beneath it — the centrepiece of the Munich S-Bahn network that carries an enormous volume of suburban traffic across the metropolitan area. Ongoing modernisation work as part of the Second S-Bahn Core Route project will further expand the station's capacity, while the adjacent U-Bahn station provides seamless connections to all parts of the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

München Hauptbahnhof is located just west of the Altstadt, with Marienplatz reachable in around five minutes on U-Bahn lines U4 or U5, or on foot in about 15 minutes. The station sits above a major S-Bahn hub serving the entire Greater Munich region.
The station houses an extensive shopping concourse with supermarkets, pharmacies, bakeries, and a wide selection of restaurants operating into the late evening. Luggage lockers, a DB travel centre, and currency exchange services are all available on the main concourse.
ICE and IC trains connect Munich to Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Cologne, while international services run to Vienna, Salzburg, Zurich, and Paris. Nightjet sleeper trains also depart from here for Rome, Venice, Amsterdam, and other European destinations.
S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 run from München Hbf directly to Munich Airport in approximately 40 minutes; trains depart every ten minutes during the day. The Lufthansa Airport Bus is also an option if you prefer a non-stop coach service.
Coin-operated luggage lockers are available in several locations around the station, including the lower concourse near the S-Bahn entrance. A staffed left-luggage office is located on track level and accepts larger items such as bicycles and oversized bags.
