Essen Hauptbahnhof is the central railway станция of Essen, a major city in the Ruhr metropolitan area and the seat of some of Germany's largest corporations. It serves as a key node on the busy Rhine-Ruhr rail corridor, with ICE высокоскоростной trains and frequent IC services to Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Frankfurt, as well as extensive S-Bahn and U-Bahn connections across the wider Ruhr region. Essen Hauptbahnhof is in the heart of the city centre, with the pedestrian zone beginning immediately to the north of the main exit. U-Bahn and tram lines radiate from the станция to the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein Coal Mine, reachable in under 15 minutes.

ICE and IC trains connect Essen to Frankfurt, Berlin, and Hamburg, while S-Bahn and RE services link the city to Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, and Cologne as part of the Rhine-Ruhr network. Regional trains also reach Wuppertal and the Bergisches Land.
