On the classic main line from Paris to Toulouse by way of Châteauroux, Argenton-sur-Creuse serves a town in the Indre department at the northern edge of the Massif Central, under UIC code 8759712. The route it belongs to, running through Limoges and Brive, was for many years the principal artery between the capital and the south-west, and it retains long-distance as well as regional services. The town is built on both banks of the Creuse, its older houses rising directly from the river with slate roofs and wooden balconies, and the Gallo-Roman site of Argentomagus lies immediately to the north.
