Just outside the medieval ramparts of Avignon, the city-centre station recorded as UIC 8776500 serves regional traffic on the corridor linking Lyon, Nîmes, and Marseille. It is the closer of the two stations serving the city: high-speed trains call instead at Avignon TGV to the south, which since 2013 has been joined to the centre by a short shuttle railway known locally as the Virgule. From the platforms it is a walk of a few minutes to the Palais des Papes, seat of the papacy for much of the fourteenth century, and to the surviving arches of the Pont Saint-Bénézet. Avignon Centre stands near 43.94 degrees north, 4.81 degrees east, in the Rhône delta country of Provence.

Avignon Centre is the historic city station inside the city walls, served by TER regional trains and some Intercités. Avignon TGV is a dedicated high-speed station on the LGV Méditerranée, located about five kilometres outside the city and connected by a shuttle bus to the centre.

The Palais des Papes is a ten-minute walk from Avignon Centre station, directly through the old city walls. The station sits just inside the ramparts, making it the most convenient access point for the UNESCO-listed historic centre.

TER trains from Avignon Centre serve Marseille, Nîmes, Arles, and the Luberon valley. Some Intercités trains to Paris also use this station, though most long-distance high-speed travel is routed via Avignon TGV.

Automated luggage lockers are available at Avignon Centre station. This is particularly handy for visitors wishing to explore the Palais des Papes or Pont d'Avignon on a day trip before taking a TGV from Avignon TGV station.

Avignon is best explored on foot within the city walls, and the medieval ramparts themselves can be walked in around two hours. During the Festival d'Avignon in July, accommodation and trains fill up very quickly, so advance booking is strongly recommended.
