Opened in 1848 on a plateau above the old town, Marseille Saint-Charles is the terminus of France's second-largest city and holds UIC code 8775100. A monumental stone staircase, added in the 1920s and decorated with allegorical sculpture representing France's colonial trade, descends from the platform level into the streets below. Since the extension of the LGV Méditerranée in 2001, high-speed services have reached Paris Gare de Lyon in a little over three hours, and the station also anchors regional traffic along the Provençal coast and inland towards Aix-en-Provence.
