Sargans is a key rail junction in the canton of St. Gallen, situated at the point where the Rhine valley opens towards Liechtenstein and where the main line from Zürich towards Chur diverges towards the Arlberg route into Austria. It serves as the interchange station for passengers travelling to Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, via bus, as no railway crosses directly into the principality at this point. InterCity and EuroCity express trains on the Zürich–Innsbruck–Vienna corridor stop here, alongside frequent regional services.
