Villach Hauptbahnhof is the central station of Villach, the second-largest city in the Austrian state of Carinthia and one of the most strategically important railway junctions in the Eastern Alps. It sits at the crossing of two major international corridors: the east–west Tauern Railway linking Salzburg with Slovenia and the south–north Drau valley line, with Railjet, Eurocity, and Nightjet services connecting Austria with Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Germany. The station is also a starting point for exploring the Carinthian lake district, the Wörthersee, and the ski regions of Nassfeld and Bad Kleinkirchheim.

Villach Hauptbahnhof is about a ten-minute walk from the pedestrian zone and the Drau river promenade in the city centre. Buses from the station reach Lake Wörthersee resorts such as Velden in around 30 minutes, making Villach a useful rail gateway to Carinthia's lakes.
Railjet services connect Villach to Vienna Hauptbahnhof, Graz, and across the border to Ljubljana and Venice. Nightjet sleeper trains also call at Villach on the Vienna–Venice and Vienna–Rome routes, providing overnight options to Italy.
The station has an ÖBB ticket counter, self-service machines, a supermarket, and a café open early in the morning. Luggage lockers are available near the main entrance, and taxis wait at the forecourt outside the southern exit.
Coin-operated luggage lockers are available at the station for day trips to the surrounding alpine and lake resorts. The lockers accept standard Austrian coins and are accessible during all train operating hours.
Villach is surrounded by the Nock Mountains, Karawanken Alps, and the Carinthian lake district, all reachable by bus or local train within an hour. The Villacher Alpe cable car is accessible by seasonal bus from the station, offering panoramic views across three countries.
