Schwanden GL is served by the S-Bahn line running through the Glarus valley, connecting to Glarus, Ziegelbrücke, and onward to Zürich. The station provides access to the upper Sernftal valley via PostBus.

SBB operates regional trains through Schwanden GL as part of the Glarus–Linthal line. The station also serves as a transfer point for PostBus services into surrounding alpine valleys.

Schwanden GL station offers basic rail facilities including a platform shelter, ticket machine, and timetable displays. Bus stops adjacent to the station provide onward connections to Elm and the Sernftal.

Schwanden is the gateway to the Sernftal valley, known for hiking and the historic slate quarries of Landesplattenberg Engi. The surrounding Glarner Alps offer excellent outdoor recreation year-round.

Schwanden GL has been an important junction in the Glarus valley since the railway reached the area in 1879. The town was historically a center for the Glarus textile industry, and the railway facilitated the transport of goods to larger markets.
