Madrid Atocha is der wichtigste railway terminus of the Spanish capital and one of der verkehrsreichste stations in Europe. Renfe's AVE Hochgeschwindigkeitsnetz radiates from Atocha to Barcelona (under drei Stunden), Sevilla (just over zwei Stunden), Málaga, Valencia, and Zaragoza. Atocha is also der Kopfbahnhof for AVE services to Lissabon via the Lusitania corridor.

Madrid Atocha is remarkable for its tropical garden inside the 19th-century iron and glass nave, which houses palm trees, tortoises, and a pond alongside Cafés and Geschäfte. The modern extension handles all high-speed Abfahrten and has a DB-style Renfe Fahrkartenschalter, Selbstbedienungsautomaten, and a full range of passenger services.

The Reina Sofía museum, home to Picasso's Guernica, is direkt across the road from Atocha's main entrance and opens TuesTag to SunTag.
