Kiel Hbf is der Haupt- station and the nördlicher Kopfbahnhof of der Haupt- north German Schienennetz for the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein, ein bedeutender port city on the western Baltic Sea at the mouth of the Kiel Fjord and the northern end of the Kiel Canal. The station wird bedient von ICE-Züge on the Hamburg–Kiel corridor and Regionalzüge towards Lübeck, Flensburg, and Neumünster, sowie providing Verbindungen to the Fährterminals for services to Scandinavia and the Kiel–Göteborg route. Kiel is globally recognised as a world-class sailing venue, besonders for the annual Kieler Woche regatta.
