About Heidelberg Hbf

Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof is the main station of this celebrated university city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with ICE services to Frankfurt, Mannheim, and Stuttgart as well as regional trains throughout the Rhine-Neckar region. The station was relocated westwards in 1955 and has direct tram links to the historic Altstadt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof lies about three kilometres west of the historic Altstadt; tram lines 21, 22, 24, and 26 bridge the gap in about ten minutes. The castle funicular departs from Kornmarkt in the old town, a short tram ride from the station.
ICE trains connect Heidelberg to Frankfurt in under an hour and to Stuttgart in about 40 minutes. Regional RE and S-Bahn services link the city to Mannheim — the main Rhine-Neckar hub — in just 12 minutes.
The station has a DB Reisezentrum, luggage lockers, a supermarket, and several cafés and bakeries. Tram and bus stops are directly outside, and a taxi rank is available at the northern exit for direct transport to the old town.
Luggage lockers are available at the station and are a practical option for day visitors arriving from Frankfurt or Stuttgart. The lockers accept coins and card payments and are accessible throughout station opening hours.
Heidelberg's Hauptstrasse, one of Germany's longest pedestrian shopping streets, runs from Bismarckplatz — the tram interchange closest to the station — all the way to the castle steps. The Philosopher's Walk on the opposite bank offers the best panoramic views of the castle and is most beautiful at sunset.
