Where the Rhône valley narrows to a gorge between the cantons of Valais and Vaud, St-Maurice guards a crossing that has been fortified since Roman times; the station there is recorded as UIC 8501403. Trains on the main line from Geneva and Lausanne towards Brig and the Simplon tunnel call here, along with regional services into the Chablais. The abbey above the town was founded in 515 around the grave of a martyred Roman officer and has been occupied continuously since, which makes it among the oldest monastic communities in the western Church. Nineteenth- and twentieth-century artillery works cut into the cliffs above testify to the same strategic logic in a later age. The station lies at about 46.22 degrees north, 7.00 degrees east.

St-Maurice station is located in the narrow Rhône gorge in the canton of Valais, at the historic choke-point between the Lower Valais and the Chablais region. The town has been a strategic crossing since Roman times and the station reflects its role as a gateway between the Valais and Lake Geneva.

SBB InterRegio and regional trains stop at St-Maurice on the Geneva–Lausanne–Brig main line, offering connections to Lausanne in around 35 minutes and to Martigny and Sion further up the Valais. The station is served by trains running throughout the day.

St-Maurice has automated ticket machines and a waiting area. The station is compact and does not have a staffed counter, so tickets should be purchased in advance through the SBB app or at a nearby major station.

St-Maurice does not have dedicated luggage lockers. Travellers needing secure storage should use facilities at Martigny, a short train ride away, where a full range of SBB Gepäck services is available.

St-Maurice is home to the Abbey of Saint-Maurice, one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world, founded in the 4th century and still active today. The abbey treasury and underground necropolis are open to visitors and are within a five-minute walk of the station.
