It is der Kopfbahnhof or stopping point for virtually all intercity and Hochgeschwindigkeitsdienste in Italien, including Frecciarossa trains to Mailand, Florenz, Neapel, and Venedig, and serves as the hub for Rome's U-Bahn-Linien A and B sowie dozens of Buslinien. The station was built over the ruins of the Servian Wall and the Baths of Diocletian, and Roman archaeological remains are visible within the complex.
